27 Dec 2025

Traveling with kids always comes with extra questions. Some focus on destinations and activities; others on daily comfort and safety. This FAQ brings together the most frequently asked questions, along with those that truly shape the family experience on Koh Samui.

The most often asked questions from parents

When parents prepare to travel with children, their primary concern is general matters. Where to go and what to do there. It's also important, so let's cover these questions first. After that, we can address key questions about comfort and safety.

Is Koh Samui or Koh Phangan better for a family holiday?

Koh Samui is the better choice for a family vacation if you're traveling with small children or need more kid-friendly facilities. It has numerous restaurants, nice hotels, family attractions, and hospitals. Koh Phangan is great too, but it has more of a small island vibe with fewer amenities for families.

Is Phuket better than Koh Samui for a holiday with kids?

That really depends on many things. Our choice is Koh Samui, but you can go deeper and check out the article where we provide a  detailed comparison of Phuket and Koh Samui for family stay .

What are the best activities in Koh Samui for older children?

Water sports like paddleboarding and jet skiing, especially at Chaweng and BoPhut Beach, obstacle fun at AirGym.Family, and exploring viewpoints or Overlap Stone are exciting options for older children. These activities are active, safe, and well suited for adventurous kids.

What can families do on a rainy day in Koh Samui?

On rainy days, families can enjoy indoor fun at our Kids Club, visit Central Festival Samui, or relax at a spa, some of which offer kids' massages. Cooking classes are another popular indoor activity.

Is Koh Samui suitable for babies and toddlers?

Yes, Koh Samui is very baby-friendly. Many resorts provide car seats, baby cots, and shaded areas on sandy beaches. Locals generally love children, and most restaurants offer high chairs and are happy to accommodate families. See our guide to  Samui beaches suitable for family visits .

What is the main attraction in Koh Samui?

The Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) is often considered the main attraction in Koh Samui. Wat Plai Laem and the Secret Buddha Garden are also popular cultural sites worth visiting.

Are there any small trips or day tours from Koh Samui?

Yes, popular day trips include visiting Koh Madsum (Pig Island), snorkeling near Koh Tao, and exploring Ang Thong Marine Park. These trips are suitable for families and usually take a full day.

What's the best time of the year to visit Koh Samui with kids?

The best time to visit Koh Samui with children is between January and August, when the weather is mostly dry and the sea is calm. October to December are the wettest months and better suited for slower, indoor-focused holidays. A  detailed seasonal guide is available here .

Is Koh Samui good for a long family vacation?

Yes, many families stay for weeks or even months. The island offers family-friendly hotels, long-term rentals, and a wide range of restaurants accustomed to serving children of all ages.

What local food can kids eat in Koh Samui?

Popular kid-friendly foods include mango sticky rice, spring rolls, fried rice, and fruit smoothies from local markets such as Fisherman's Village. Many Thai dishes can be prepared mild, and vendors are usually happy to adapt meals for children.

What's the water temperature like?

Sea temperatures stay warm year-round, averaging between 27 and 30°C (81–86°F). Swimming and snorkeling are comfortable most of the year, though some beaches may have rougher conditions during October and November.

What are the local rules or etiquette for kids in Samui?

Children are welcome on Koh Samui, but basic etiquette is expected. In temples, kids should dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, and behave quietly. Shoes are usually removed before entering homes and some indoor spaces. Calm and respectful behavior in public is appreciated.

Parents' questions about Samui that are really important!

Next, we'll cover the questions parents rarely ask, but should consider when planning a family trip, since these details often affect daily comfort far more than expected.

Are there good hospitals on the island?

Bangkok Hospital Samui is the top option, a private and modern hospital with English-speaking staff and 24/7 emergency care. It is the most common choice for tourists and families. Samui International Hospital is another private option, suitable for general medical issues. The government hospital is cheaper but more basic and usually slower. For serious cases, most people go directly to a private hospital. Confidence level is high, based on long-term local experience.

What is the public transport on Samui and how to move around?

There is no real public transport system on Koh Samui. Songthaews, shared truck taxis, officially exist and operate on some routes, but they are limited. Most visitors rent scooters or cars or use taxis, which is the most practical way to get around the island.

Is it many geckos, snakes and other animals? What about mosquitoes?

Geckos are very common on Koh Samui, especially in the evenings. They are harmless, help control insects, and are part of everyday island life. Snakes do exist, but encounters are rare and usually limited to more wild or less-developed areas, as they tend to avoid people. Mosquitoes are present year-round, especially after rain and in garden areas. Using mosquito repellent in the early morning and evening is usually enough, and repellents are easy to find in local pharmacies and shops.

What to bring to Samui when traveling with kids?

Bring child-safe mosquito protection, as kid-friendly and DEET-free options are limited locally. Mosquito nets, plug-in diffusers, and gentle wipes are useful, especially at night. Sun protection is essential, including high-SPF water-resistant sunscreen, UV 50+ swimwear, hats, and sunglasses, since sunburn happens fast. A few familiar toys such as coloring books or small beach toys help kids relax. Also pack prescription medications, electrolyte solutions, baby wipes, travel pillows or a stroller, and light snacks. Some family-friendly hotels provide many essentials, so you can check this list of  what you don't need to pack when traveling with kids .
