Best Beaches for Families with Kids on Koh Samui

10 Nov 2025

When you're traveling with kids, choosing the right beach isn't just about the view – it's about peace of mind. You want a place where little feet can run safely, splash freely, and where you, as a parent, can finally exhale.

Let's start with the most important thing: safety. A good family beach should have shallow, calm water – the kind where your child can wade for meters without suddenly losing the ground under their feet. No unexpected holes, no waves strong enough to knock a toddler over. Just soft ripples, warm water, and an endless playground of sand.

And speaking of sand – it matters. Beaches with soft, coral-free sand are a blessing. No sharp shells, no hidden rocks, just smooth golden grains perfect for castle building. Cleanliness is also non-negotiable. You shouldn't have to scan every square meter for glass or trash before letting your kid sit down.

Next comes comfort. Having a small café or restaurant nearby is a lifesaver – not just for a quick snack or a fresh coconut, but for something as simple as a clean restroom or a cold bottle of water. The trick is finding a place with enough convenience, but not too crowded or chaotic. The ideal family beach strikes that balance – peaceful but not deserted.

So, which beaches on Koh Samui actually fit that description?

Ban Tai Beach is probably the top pick. Located just past Maenam, it's calm, shallow, and family-friendly. There aren't too many hotels right on the shore, which keeps the vibe relaxed. The only downside – it's getting popular. Arrive early in the morning, when the air is still cool and the beach belongs mostly to you and a few locals out for a walk.

Choeng Mon Beach is another great choice. It's a little busier because there are more resorts around, but that also means plenty of food options and even beachfront pools. If you don't mind a few more people, this one offers a nice mix of comfort and fun.

Hidden beach paradise in Taling Ngam, Koh Samui. Towering palms fringe the shore, creating a secluded tropical haven with crystal-clear waters.
Then there's Khiri Wongkaram Beach (Thaling Ngam) , a bit of a hidden gem. It's farther from the main tourist areas, which means it's quieter and more natural. Around the Purple Frog café, the atmosphere is lovely – peaceful, green, and ideal for young families. Just note: from December to March, the tides rise high here, and that shallow water disappears. So it's perfect most of the year, but not during high-tide season.

All these beaches have parking, gear rentals, showers, and shaded areas. The sea is calm most of the year, with good visibility for parents and gentle waves for kids.

You might be wondering – what about Lamai, Chaweng? They're famous, yes, but not great for small children. The slope into the water is steep, the waves can get strong, and there are simply too many tourists.

Crystal Bay is another lovely spot that deserves a mention. It's tucked between Lamai and Chaweng, which means you get postcard views – turquoise water, fine white sand, and those dramatic granite boulders framing the bay. The water here is shallow and crystal clear, perfect for small kids to splash around. The only drawback is the crowd. Because of its beauty and location, Crystal Bay attracts a lot of tourists, especially in high season. It's stunning, but don't expect solitude.

As for Lipa Noi Beach, it technically checks all the boxes – shallow water, calm sea – but it's so plain and quiet that it barely stands out. Maybe that's its only charm: nothing to complain about, but nothing to remember either.

Fishermans Village Beach

Fisherman's Village Beach (Bophut Beach)

The real name of this beach is Bophut Beach, but most people know it as Fisherman's Village Beach, since its most popular stretch sits right in front of the well-known Fisherman's Village area. It's one of those rare spots on Samui that has a little bit of everything: local character, convenience, and a tranquil, family-friendly atmosphere.

The beach is vast and clean. The sand is a little rougher than the sand on Ban Tai or Choeng Mon, but it's still fine for walking on and great for kids to play on. The sea stays shallow along the shore and is calm most of the year, so it's one of the safest places for families to swim.

Another significant advantage is that Fisherman's Village Beach is accessible year-round, unlike some beaches that undergo significant changes with the seasons. This beach is always open and nice for swimming, even in the winter (December to March), when tides and waves impact other portions of the island.

Another significant advantage is its location. It's only a 5-minute walk from Maya Resort, so it's a quick and easy excursion to the beach, especially with kids. You don't have to plan or check the weather; you can just go whenever you want. And if the weather isn't ideal, you can stay at the Kids Club where children can enjoy indoor activities, outdoor pools, and the care of professional supervisors.

There is also a lot to do here. Families can enjoy fun activities like riding jet skis, taking island tours, or going fishing right from the beach. There are cafés, restaurants, and places to get a massage all along the beach for people who want to relax. Everything you need, from a smoothie to a coconut to a peaceful place to relax, is only a short walk away.

Fisherman's Village is the best beach, as it offers simple access compared to Ban Tai, is always relaxing like Taling Ngam, and has a lot more to see and do after your swim. At night, the area becomes one of the island's most lively places, with the Walking Street market filling the air with food, music, and local life.

This beach isn't the most private on Samui, but that's why families adore it. Fisherman's Village Beach is a lively yet calm spot where you can swim safely, dine healthily, and enjoy the authentic atmosphere of Koh Samui in comfort.

Where is Maya Beach?

Many guests ask us this. Maya Beach is not on Koh Samui. If you heard about "Maya Beach", you most likely meant Maya Bay, a famous bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh in Krabi Province, closer to Phuket, on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand. It has no connection to Maya Resort. Our resort is located on Koh Samui in the Gulf of Siam, also in the south of Thailand, but on the opposite coast.

So, which beach to choose? Map of the best family beaches

Each family has its own version of "perfect," but the best family beaches on Samui all share one thing – they let you relax while your kids explore. That's the real luxury.
